Die Statue ist in Lebensgröße und steht auf einem ca 2,20m hohen Marmorsockel. Die Statue sitzt auf einem Stuhl und baut eine Geige. Das Material ist Bronze. Die Inschrift auf der Tafel lautet: "M. Klotz GEB.1653 GEST.1743"
"Matthias Klotz (auch Mathias Cloz, Khloz, Khlotz; getauft am 11. Juni 1653 in Mittenwald, Oberbayern; † 16. August 1743 ebenda) gilt als Begründer des Geigenbaus in Mittenwald.
Matthias Klotz war das zweite Kind des Schneiders Urban Klotz (Vrbanus Cloz, 1627-1691) und seiner Ehefrau Sophia (gest. 1681). Seine Ausbildung hat er wahrscheinlich in Füssen erhalten, als Geselle arbeitete er dann von 1672 bis 1678 in der Paduaer Werkstatt des Allgäuer Lautenmachers Pietro Railich. Über seinen weiteren Lebensweg bis zu seiner Rückkehr nach Mittenwald in den 1680er Jahren ist nichts bekannt.
Um den Jahreswechsel 1685/1686 heiratete Matthias Klotz in Mittenwald die Weberstochter Maria Seiz. Aus dieser ersten Ehe gingen sechs Kinder hervor, darunter die späteren Geigenmacher Georg I. und Sebastian I. Nach dem Tod der ersten Ehefrau 1704 heiratete Matthias Klotz 1705 Ursula Schändl, geb. Schlaucher, die Witwe des Metzgers Matthias Schändl. Sie brachte drei Kinder mit in die Ehe, darunter den späteren Geigenmacher Michael Schändl. Aus ihrer Verbindung mit Matthias Klotz gingen drei weitere Kinder hervor, darunter der spätere Geigenmacher Johann Carol. Matthias Klotz starb 1743 im Alter von über 90 Jahren.
In Mittenwald bildete Matthias Klotz mehrere Geigenmacher aus, darunter auch seine Söhne Georg I., Sebastian I. und Johann Carol. Bekannt wurde besonders sein Sohn Sebastian I. Klotz. Der Geigenbau brachte dem Ort einen gewissen Wohlstand, nachdem dort lange Zeit Armut geherrscht hatte.
Aegidius Klotz, ein Sohn des Sebastian I. und Enkel von Matthias Klotz, gilt als Ahnherr der deutschen Geigenbauertradition, da er die Modellästhetik des Jakob Stainer übernahm, dessen Geigen bis um etwa 1800 gefragter waren als die des Antonio Stradivari.
Heute gibt es in Mittenwald eine Geigenbauschule, ein Geigenbaumuseum sowie viele selbständige Geigenbaumeister. Vor der Pfarrkirche St. Peter und Paul steht ein Denkmal zu Ehren von Matthias Klotz." - Quelle: Wikipedia
