The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is located in mid-town Manhattan and is centered around the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid. It features interactive exhibits and virtual, multi-sensory technology. The museum has on display the USS Growler submarine, a British Airways Concorde supersonic jet airliner, and over thirty restored aircraft. In late April 2012 the museum is scheduled to have the space shuttle Enterprise on display.
According to their website (see link), visitors may explore four decks of the USS Intrepid, which was active from World War II to the Vietnam War. On the flight deck visitors can view the restored aircraft, the restoration tent, and the bridges. The hangar deck reveals the inner workings of an aircraft carrier. It contains the The Exploreum, a 13,000-square-foot interactive exhibition space divided into four zones focused on the Intrepid’s history with the themes of water, space, air and life at sea. The gallery deck has the Combat Information Center, Pilot Ready Room and Marine berthing facilities. The third deck features the ship's galley, additional berthing areas, a recreated mess deck, and a public cafe.
Separately paid and arranged public tour programs take visitors inside the USS Growler and the Supersonic Concorde. The USS Growler is a diesel-powered strategic missile submarine. A guided tour of the USS Growler submarine takes visitors to the Control Room & Attack Center, the aft torpedo area and the crew's mess hall. The Concorde guided tour takes visitors to the first class cabin and the flight deck. Other tours include: Humanity Behind the Hardware, Story of Intrepid - Vietnam, With Bravery and Distinction - The African American Journey in Sea, Air and Space, and Intrepid Women.
