A 1927 Virginia historical marker about the "Fairfax Line" for a massive land grant would have existed when the 1940 American Guide was written.

The travel guide says:
"US 11 crosses the southwestern boundary of the Fairfax Grant. This disputed boundary was established in 1736. Fairfax's Proprietary had natural boundaries on all sides except the southwestern an omission that permitted his lordship to lay claim to an unlimited amount of land until a line was established between points in the Blue Ridge and the Alleghenies."
---- Virginia - A Guide to the Old Dominion State, 1940.

This actual roadside marker would have been here when the guide was created, thus prompting the writer about this piece of history. This vast land grant encompassed most of northern Virginia.
