The statue, by Karin Jonzen (1914-1998), was commissioned
in 1971. The life sized statue, made from bronze, is on a low white stone
plinth. It depicts a male figure, in working clothes, with his left knee resting
on the ground. His right foot is planted on the ground and his right hand rests
upon his right knee with his elbow pointing skywards. His left hand is touching
the ground in front of him as if tending to a plant. His head is in a downward
position paying attention to what he is doing. This is a pose that many will
recognise.
A plaque is attached to the plinth that reads:
"The Gardener / by / Karin Jonzen FRBS / Commissioned by the Trees, Gardens
and City Open / Spaces Committee of the Corporation of London / 1971".
The 'Secret London' website has this to say about the statue and artist:
"This rather lovely piece by Karin Jonzen is a beautiful tribute to all the
gardeners whose unseen hard work makes our city a much brighter place. Jonzen
(1914-1998) found fame after winning the 1939 Prix de Rome as a student but she
was dogged by ill-health later in her career."
