The Dingo fence (also Dog Fence) is a continuous mesh fence which stretches 5531km (3437mi) from Jimbour in Queensland to the ocean near Yalata in remote South Australia. First completed in 1885, the fence was constructed to protect sheep herds in Southern Australia from wild dingos. The fence is 6ft in height with a further 1ft dug into the ground.
The fence was a great achievement not only in length and capability, but also required the cooperation of (then British colonies) New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia to complete the project. Sheep formed the backbone of the economy for the Australian colonies and this project was seen as vital to protect these fertile lands. The wild dingo had already been culled extensively in these areas prior to 1885.
The fence has fallen into disrepair and been restored several times during the 1900's. Today the fence is maintained by state government maintenance crews who drive the length of the fence and repair any damage found.
Guinness World Records acknowledges the Dingo Fence as being the longest fence in the world: (
