Organized as St. Mary’s Church, the Cathedral of the Epiphany ministered to the first Italian, Irish and German Immigrants in Sioux City. The brick Gothic Revival structure was begun in 1891 and took 13 years to complete. It was selected as a Cathedral and dedicated to the Epiphany of the Lord in 1902. The twin steeples were added to the octagonal towers in the early 1950’s.
The focal point in the sanctuary is the altar table, the symbol of Christ’s sacrifice and the intricately carved oak Bishop’s Chair beside it. Rt. Rev. Philip Garrigan, the first Bishop in the Sioux City Diocese, commissioned the work of art which features such symbols as the Bishop’s hat and crosier, miter, and staffs. Above the altar a late medieval crucifix includes images of the Blessed Mother and St. John on either end of Jesus’ outstretched arms. The carved reredos is a recent addition to the Cathedral and came from St. Thomas Church in Emmetsburg.
Exquisite stained glass windows are Bavarian; they portray the twelve apostles and depict New Testament themes. The statue of the Blessed Mother was hand carved in Italy; the pomegranate she offers her child is a symbol of Christ’s passion. The snakes on her robe were added because the term “Sioux” means snakes in the Lakota and Dakota tongue. The bronze Pieta, another Italian sculpture, embraces the message of Jesus’ sacrifice for our salvation. The statue of Joseph represents those who labor, his protective hand shelters the small replica of the Cathedral.
Today mass is held in English, Spanish, Latin and Vietnamese as the church reaches out to a multi-ethnic parish.
