“Blessing, honor, glory, and power be unto Him:” The words engraved over the door are welcoming to worshippers. One of the largest Prairie School buildings in the state, this architectural “gem” was designed by William Steel, the local architect of the Woodbury County Courthouse. Constructed in 1918 as First Congregational Church, the structure has seen very little change. The original parish maintained the building until 1967, and the Baptists purchased it several years later and used the building for 40 years. In 2009 the Iglesia Evangelica Pentecostes Principe de Paz became the new worshipping community to occupy the building.
The two story square brick edifice rises two stories high and is capped with a large Byzantine dome; the large arched windows are of leaded art glass. Two rectangular posts and a wrought iron gate embellish the recessed entry, and the bandshell shaped choir loft enhances the interior acoustics. The lighted cross mounted on the building’s corner offers a warm invitation to all. The church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 as #79000953.
