A depiction of patron St. Boniface hangs in the rectory, a memento taken from the original frame church. An English Benedictine monk, St. Boniface was sent as an Apostle to Germany A.D.718. He was later martyred for his faith.
Organized in 1885, St. Boniface Church was the second Catholic parish in Sioux City. The first Mass was celebrated in the present edifice on Easter Sunday in 1911. Priests from the Sacred Heart Province of the Franciscan Order served St. Boniface for most of the 20th century.
The high altar holds statues of St. Boniface and St. John the Baptist. Franciscan saints are portrayed in stained glass: St. Louis, King of France, a lay worker in charitable work, and St. Elizabeth of Hungary who fed the hungry with her bread. The rose window above the choir loft holds the image of St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music. The seven sacraments are also captured in glass, six of which are represented on the pillars. The baptismal font in the rear of the nave is a reminder of entering new life through baptism. Stenciling and gold leaf enhance the nave walls, and the recently added elevator has been built into the old confessional. St. Boniface Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.
