Above the awning over the sidewalk in the front of the western-styled Shoal Creek Saloon is a very large football helmet painted with the New Orleans Saints colors and logo. It is not ginomous, but it is as big as a VW car, or at least parts of one. In fact, the helmet is manufactured from car parts shaped and welded together from what appears to be a former VW car. The helmet is the roof and back of a Bug, and the face guard is made from the VW's chrome fenders. The artistic crafting of the oversized helmet is admirable, especially since it is so well proportioned and fashioned from the steel and chrome to actually look like a football helmet from street level or from the main road in front of the eatery.
The Shoal Creek Saloon is located at 909 N. Lamar, Austin, TX 78703. It is known for its Louisiana cajun food like crawfish, fried catfish, shrimp, and gumbos. It also serves chicken fried steak, hamburgers, and various chicken sandwiches along with its daily specials and veggie meals. For menue details, see link below.
