This stream was known to the Iroquois Indians as "Ga-do-o-ya-deh," meaning "Level Heavens". To the white man it was known as "Eleven Mile Creek" being eleven miles from Buffalo village. After 1800 the creek was named for Joseph Ellicott, surveyor general of the Holland Land Co., who, during the years 1797-1800 surveyed the western portion of New York state.
