During the 1990's the Western Australian State Government provided funding for an extensive $10 million capital works program by the WA Police Service to improve police facilities in the southern suburbs.
As part of that program this complex was built at a cost of $7.5 million to provide accommodation for several police programs and functions, and about 150 police personnel. It was officially opened on 4 August, 1998 by the Premier Richard Court MLA.
The complex includes the new headquarters for the Cannington District Police Office; integrated police operations which includes general duties, traffic operations and district detectives; District Support Group (encompassing anti-theft operations, mobile policing facilities, drug and alcohol co-ordinator); forensic; District Information Support Centre - which collates crime information and assists police squads in detailing patterns of criminal activity; District Training Officer; and District Community Policing Co-ordinator.
Earlier the Police Minister Mr John Day said the complex had been designed using the WA police building code, which had been nominated for national awards. The building had a projected life span of 50 years and was designed to expand with future staff increases.
"The striking architectural features complement the changing face of the Cannington area and its prominent location will provide easy access by the local community," the Minister said.
Public art is a prominent feature of the complex as part of the Per Cent for Art Scheme, which was managed by the Department of Contract and Management Services.
Artist Jon Terry was commissioned to develop artwork to be located throughout the police complex and its surroundings. The artwork was based on the history, fauna and flora of the Canning River, which is very close to the complex.
There is a mural to the right of the front entry, and I've included a photo of that. To the left of the front entry, in the side view, are a motor vehicle and a watercraft on the top of poles, symbolising the traffic and water police responsibilities of the district. I haven't included photos of the rest of the artwork, but if the category managers consider it desirable I'm happy to return and take some photos.

Visit Instructions:
To log a visit, you must post a photo of you in front of the building described, with your GPS in the photo. No drive by photos.
I have had NO problems with taking photos of Police stations but please respect the fact that some services may be nervous about having their photo taken and inquire as to why... I have found that once things are explained they are more than happy to let me photograph the building, crest, chief... (they are people too!)
