Burg Reichenstein is a spur castle on a hill east of Arlesheim. It was first mentioned in 1239 but must be older. It was sold to the bishop of Basel in 1245 who pledged it to the family Reich, thus the name "Reichenstein". The castle was damaged in the earthquake of 1356 but soon rebuilt. In the 16th century the family Reich neglected the castle but stayed owner of the ruined building until 1793, in 1813 it was sold to Johann-Rudolf Forcart-Weiss.
J. Brodbeck-Sandreuter bought the property in 1932 and let reconstruct part of the castle by Eugen Probst. The reconstruction was limited to the main tower who was used as a summer residence. The work was strongly influenced by the historicistic ideas of Probst and abstained from archeological analysis so the result was not a historic reconstruction.
The owner family transferred the property to a private foundation, that was converted to a non-profit foundation in 1972. The castle is not accessible for the public but can be rented for events with up to 50 people. It is popular for weddings, birthday parties and also conferences.
