King Chulalongkorn (b. 1853-d. 1910), also known as King Rama 5 (reigned: 1868-1910), is one of the great kings of Thailand, and fondly remembered by his people. He is known for resisting the nefarious imperial ambitions of both Britain and France, modernising his country, and reforming the governmental administration. Statues of him are to be seen throughout Thailand, and invariably at the front of provincial administration buildings (Provincial Halls).
This statue is found at the entrance to the new, and impressive looking, Provincial Hall of the central Thai province of Kamphaeng Phet. This new Hall resides maybe 10kms or so (by road) north of the provincial capital. Thus requiring that everyone having dealings with the provincial and national government trek efficiently northwards.
The King is depicted life-sized, in military garb, holding his pith helmet in his left hand, and in his right a scroll. He stands on a plinth, which has a biographical plaque, which in turn sits on a dais. All in all an impressive arrangement.
As with most statues in Thailand this is also a shrine. Locals do come by to pay their respects to the King.
Of note, this is the second such statue in the province. In the centre of the capital is the former Provincial Hall. Outside this Hall is also a statue of King Chula (already waymarked).
I will add one more note. I did visit this set of offices in the late afternoon, after business hours. I mention this as there were more than a few stray dogs wandering around these grounds. As 10% of stray dogs have rabies, and they are prone to attack foreigners (as you look and smell different), take care.
