This monument to the
44th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry is in recognition of their service during the
Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. This marker indicates the position of the 44th at 5:00 p.m. on September 19, 1863. The 44th Illinois Infantry was organized at Chicago, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on September 25, 1861 This is one of two markers to the 44th Illinois on the battlefield.

Short Physical Description
2'6" x 1'2" x 2'6" high rectangular slab of dark Quincy granite. Rock-faced sides; polished & inscribed front. "Illinois" is in large raised letters on beveled top. Marks unit's position at 5:00 p.m. on September 19, 1863.
