In Dedham, along High Street, is the Dedham First Parish and Church, a Unitarian-Universalist Church that has roots all the way back to the settlement of Dedham in 1638.
When Dedham was settled, the first church was established at this location. The present structure has portions that date back to 1762, but most of the structure dates back to the mid-1800s. In 1818, as with many churches in New England, the congregation became so polarized over religious views that it split. The First Parish and Church became a Unitarian Church, while the rest of the assembly became the Congregational Church and built a church across the street. Relations were so poor between the two churches that the entrance was rotated from facing the street to facing the small green. In 1878, the 250th Anniversary of the congregation was held, which included several services held with the Allin Congregational Church, and there have been events held between the two churches recently.
The church is a classic white wood-clapboard church, with a clock and short steeple at the front of the building. The front entrance includes two doors.
