The St Francis Xavier Church of Melaka City was built in 1849, according to the time capsule inscription. It is located in the 'old town' area of Melaka (which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site). At that time it must have dominated the skyline. It is still an impressive sight. The church was built in honour of St. Francis Xavier, a prominent 16th-century Catholic missionary. It is a twin-spired, neo-gothic building. Over the decades the church has been renovated and extended. It is still in use as a Catholic church.

Just inside the right gate (as viewed from outside the church) is a time capsule, easily discerned, adjacent to two statues, one of St Francis and the other of his leading disciple. The plaque on the capsule presents all the relevant information:
