The Vasco da Gama Bridge is a bridge over the Tagus river, in the greater Lisbon area, linking Lisbon to Montijo and Alcochete Sacavém and very close to the Park of Nations, where the Expo 98.

Inaugurated on April 4, 1998, the bridge is the longest in Europe and is currently the ninth most extensive of the world, with its 17.3 km length, of which 10 are on the waters of the Tagus estuary.

The span (length of the board) of the central viaduct is 420 m. It was built to provide an alternative to the bridge on April 25 for the traffic that flows between northern and southern zone of the Portuguese capital.

When its construction was necessary to take special care about the environmental impact, since through the Natural Park of the Tagus Estuary,an important pan-European food and nesting waterfowl. Was also necessary to carry to the resettlement of 300 families.

The name of the bridge commemorates the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Vasco da Gama to India in 1498.

It is one of the highest buildings in Portugal, 155 meters high.
