This marker for the
123rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment is in recognition of their service during the
Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. It marker the position of the 123rd from 1 to 5 p.m. on September 19, 1863. This is one of three markers to the 123rd Illinois Infantry Regiment on the battlefield. The 123rd Illinois Infantry was organized at Camp Terry, Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on September 6, 1862.

Short Physical Description
2'6" x 1'2" x 2'6" high rectangular slab of dark Quincy granite. Rock-faced sides; polished & inscribed front. "Illinois" is in large raised letters on beveled top. Marks unit's position on September 19, 1863, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.
