There are seven South Dakota servicemen who are listed as POW/MIA since the Vietnam War, 2 killed in action but bodies not recovered and 5 presumed to be dead. This POW/MIA marker sits beneath the American and POW/MIA flags at Veterans Memorial Park. The marker has the words Rolling Thunder, Inc., Chapter 1, South Dakota encircling the POW/MIA in the middle; this marker includes the date 2005. Rolling Thunder is an organized group of veteran motorcyclists who have voiced concern for POW’s and MIA’s and have done much to provide support for our servicemen and their needs. Their Rides for Freedom are annual events.
Not far from this marker is the four sided memorial which serves as a centerpiece in Sioux Falls’ Veterans Memorial Park. Rather than having separate memorials for each war, this park has chosen to list all the wars in which South Dakotas have participated, from the Spanish American through the Iraqui Freedom wars. The Vietnam War is listed first on the second side of the monument with the dates 1964-1973.
