This church is one of the oldest in Evansville. The building itself is 90 years old, but the history of the church as a whole goes back much further than that.
The town of Evansville was started in 1814 by Hugh McGary buying land and established the town. A few years later, in 1818, Vanderburgh County was started. Skip forward nearly 30 years to the creation First Baptist Church in 1847. According to the church's website, original membership roll consisted of 5 people. The church met in a variety of places through the early years until it built its first building in 1857 at Second St and Clark St. 10 years later, the church rebuild at 3rd and Cherry. That building was located in what is now the parking lot for the current building. In April of 1921, groundbreaking took place for the current building at the corner of 4th and Cherry. The doors opened in February of 1922.
