Thay (master) Pagoda is about 30km west of Hanoi and is located in the Ha Tay province of Vietnam. It was built during the Ly Nhan Tong Dynasty (1072-1127) and named after the Buddhist monk Tu Dao Hanh who was a teacher and the inventor of water puppetry, an art form unique to Vietnam.

Despite many restorations over the centuries, the pagoda‘s dark, subdued interior retains a powerful atmosphere. Nearly a hundred statues fill the prayer halls. The oldest date back to the pagoda‘s foundation, but the most eye-catching are two seventeenth century giant guardian lions made of clay, which weigh a thousand kilos apiece and are said to be the biggest in Vietnam.
