Folgosinho Castle, is located in the village of Folgosinho, and the ex-libris of the village, whose foundation is attributed to the legendary Viriato, who was born here.
Along with Linhares and Celorico, Folgosinho composed a defensive triangle of the valley of the River Mondego.
At the time of the Christian Reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, king Sancho I (1185-1211) issued the “Foral” in 1187, because of its strategic position and the need for settlement and defense of the region. Later king Afonso II and king D. Dinis repeated the act.
In the sixteenth century, D. Manuel I (1495-1521) granted a new “Foral” (1512). In that period, the town was regarded as Land of the King, and was given to the marquis of Arronches, the dukes of Lafões and condes of Miranda do Corvo. It was also “Comenda da Ordem de Cristo”.
Because of the administrative overhaul of the kingdom in 1836, Folgosinho was no longer a municipality, in favor of Gouveia.
In the twentieth century, the castle was classified in the Public Interest on March 25, 1936.
Currently well preserved, is itself a regional tourist attraction.
