Ce magnifique ouvrage, préfacé par le cardinal Jean-Pierre Ricard, archevêque de Bordeaux et évêque de Bazas, constitue un guide incomparable pour découvrir tous les symboles de ces vitraux et en décrypter le sens.
Un premier aperçu
Les soixante-quatre vitraux historiés n'ont pas été mis au hasard. Sur le bas-côté Nord, dans l'ombre, huit d'entre eux représentent l'Ancien Testament, côté Sud, dans la lumière, les huit vitraux correspondant rappellent la vie de Jésus.
Dans les chapelles absidiales, ils sont relatifs au saint à qui est dédiée la chapelle (saint Jean, saint Pierre, la Vierge, saint Joseph et le saint sacrement). Vingt-sept vitraux habillant la haute nef représentent quarante-huit personnages qui convergent vers le vitrail axial dédié à Jésus et Jean-Baptiste, patron de la cathédrale. « Ces vitraux ont tous une signification religieuse, c'est une bande dessinée avant l'heure. Mais on peut faire d'autres approches et lectures artistiques, historique, sociologique. La situation politique du XIXe siècle transparaît également », souligne Jean Barran. Et de conclure « Il est souhaitable que ces vitraux soient mieux entretenus et nettoyés car beaucoup nécessitent une rénovation car fragilisés par l'âge. »
