Rendilheira is a sculpture by the Portuguese artist Fernando da Silva.
Rendilheira (Bobbin lace worker) is an hommage to this art, very popular in the fishing populations of this region.
The bobbin lace is an art typical of coastal areas. It was a workmanship done by the women in his spare time or when the weather did not allow agricultural work. It was often used as gifts for weddings and christenings and also as a form of alternative income when sold.
The bobbin lace uses a bank and a pillow and is embroidered with pre-designed layouts of cardboard attached with pins.
Some traditional rendilheiras are still visible in port cities such as Peniche and Nazaré, and, in Peniche there´s even a school, not far from the sculpture, in the same garden, where this ancient art is
teached. There´s also a lace contest every year in July in this same place.
The Sculpture is a work by the sculptor Fernando da Silva. It´s made of diferent types of marble (white, pink and grey marble easily found in Portugal).
We didn´t find any reliable information about the artist.
