When the Balch Hotel opened in 1908 it featured room rates from $0.50 to $1.25, touting “hot and cold water in every room, electric lights and steam heat.” 18-inch-thick brick walls keep the building cool during the hot Dufur summers.
Through its history it served as an apartment and rooming house, and a private residence. Since 1988 it was slowly restored back to being a hotel and today it is in its full glory serving the traveling public.
