This lion is a little worse for wear, but deservedly so. He, and his less fortunate colleagues, have stood guard over the Buddhist wat of Phra Kaeo, in the old town of Kamphaeng Phet, for over five centuries. During that time kingdoms have risen and fallen, peoples been displaced and fates flicker—and what was once a busy capital is now a quiet backwater in central Thailand, however, here he stands.
Half a millennium ago the old city of Kamphaeng Phet, which lies to the immediate north of the new city of the same name, was part of the Thai kingdom of Sukhothai. This old city is now a UNESCO world heritage park. The temple concerned is one of the larger in the historical park. It was most likely a royal temple, with a palace nearby. The temple chedi, around with the lion sits, originally had a dozen or so lions in place. All of these are lost to time.
Physical Address: Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park Kamphaeng Phet , Kamphaeng Phet Thailand.
