King Chulalongkorn (b. 1853-d. 1910), also known as King Rama 5 (reigned: 1868-1910), is one of the great kings of Thailand, and fondly remembered by his people. He is known for resisting the nefarious imperial ambitions of both Britain and France, modernising his country, and reforming the governmental administration. Statues of him are to be seen throughout Thailand, and invariably at the front of provincial administration buildings (Provincial Halls).
This statue of the king is found outside the old, former Provincial Hall (I was told the new is way out of town, too far to visit on short notice) of Kamphaeng Phet, in central Thailand, ~300kms north of Bangkok. The statue is near identical to that found in Nakhon Sawan, the neighbouring province to the south. The king is depicted in military dress, with a pith helmet in his right hand and a sword in his other. He faces outwards looking towards the city centre. He stands on a plinth with a plaque, which contains a brief biography. The statue is life-sized, most likely of bronze.
As with most public statues in Thailand this is also a shrine. There is a prayer area before the statue and locals do come by to pay their respects. I have been told that there is a new provincial hall, 12kms from the city.
