Who knows whether the planet Mercury was named after the mythical figure, or the other way round... certainly I don't know. But this iconic statue has been on display over the city of Rochester for over 100 years, less some time in storage.

The statue used to be displayed on the smokestack of the Peerless Tobacco Works building. That building was demolished to make way for the Rochester War Memorial, which was built in 1951. The statue spend a couple decades in storage until restoration work was done in 1973 and a new site was identified.
