Posted with this Waymark are some photos of samples from the mineral collections of Charles Greville, Reverend Clayton Cracherode, and Charles Hatchett. The samples from Greville are corundum and gold-colored topaz. Greville (1749-1809) was a Treasurer of the Household and a prominent art collector..but he also had a special interest in mineral collections which are now here in the British Museum. The samples from Reverend Cracherode (1730–1799) include tetrahedrite, amethyst, flourite and gold in quartz. He was a major benefactor to the Museum..with his gem and mineral collection valued then at 2,500 pounds being one of the smallest of his bequests. Read more about him at (

Charles Hatchett (1765-1847) was a scientist who discovered the element niobium. The Museum displays a piece of banded jasper from his collection. Read more about him at (

There is also a collection that was given to the Museum by King George IV in 1823.
