The current City of Ottawa was formed in 2001 through an amalgamation of the former City of Ottawa and the Cities of Gloucester, Kanata, Nepean and Vanier, plus the Townships of Cumberland, Goulbourn, Osgoode, Rideau and West Carleton and the Village of Rockcliffe Park.
Prior to amalgamation Fire Station No.57 was known as Ottawa Fire Department #6. The numbering scheme means that this is the 7th station in the 5th district. Listed as equipment available to the Fire Station is the following: Pump 57 (74-0522) - 2003 HME / Fort Garry (1250/500) (SN#M9109).
Like most North American fire departments, the Ottawa Fire Service is organized in a paramilitary fashion. The current Chief of the department is John deHooge. Serving Under deHooge are three Deputy Chiefs, four Platoon Chiefs, five Division Chiefs, four Rural Sector Chiefs and twenty District Chiefs. At the station level, each station has a Captain for each of the four platoons. Each truck in the fleet is under the command of either a Captain or Lieutenant.
