There are two bronze plaques, each about eleven feet in
length, recessed into a Portland stone wall. The general area, to the north west
of The Mall and about half length between Trafalgar Square and Buckingham
Palace, is known as the King George VI Memorial. There is also a statue of King
George VI and another, more recent one, of Queen Elizabeth.
The plaque on the right (north east) shows Queen Elizabeth (The Queen Mother) in
various activities after the death of King George VI in 1952. The centre shows
Her Majesty at the races, a pursuit that she had great interest in. There is a
racehorse, probably one of her own, with its jockey bowing as he meets Queen
Elizabeth. By the top hats and ladies also wearing hats I would guess that the
race meeting is something like Royal Ascot. To the left, it shows Queen
Elizabeth meeting some gentlemen wearing war medals and ribbons. To the right is
shows her seated with two of the corgis that the royal family is so fond of.
The plaque to the left depicts moments from the time when King George VI was
still alive. Some of that was during the Second World War when the royal family
were known to go to the East End of London to meet families and personnel who
had been affected by the German bombing. The centre part of the plaque shows the
King and Queen talking to families of the East End. The left part shows some of
the bombed property and people working to effect rescues from the rubble. The
right part shows the King and Queen, probably at home, with two ladies in the
background. I would hazard a guess that the two young ladies are the current
Queen Elizabeth and her sister Princess Margaret.
These two plaques are carved in exquisite detail and the eye is drawn to many
features. Using relief, like this, shows far more than a flat canvas ever could.
