In 1740, King George II of Great Britain decreed the northern boundary of Massachusetts to be three miles north of the Merrimack River to the east of Pawtucket Falls, present day Lowell, and west of Pawtucket Falls a straight line to the New York border. At that time both New York and New Hampshire claimed present day Vermont. On July 20, 1764, boundary between New Hampshire and New York was established along the Connecticut River by King George III, giving present day Vermont to New York. Land disputes caused Vermonters to form an independent Republic of Vermont on January 15, 1777. In 1791, Vermont ratified the constitution and joined United States as the 14th state.
Route 142 runs north-south and parallels the Connecticut River. It is the scenic route between eastern Vermont and western Massachusetts. The border crossing, between the towns are Vernon, VT and Northfield, MA, is marked by a double-sided road sign. There is also a boundary stone, lying on the ground, inscribed: VT 1896.
