According to the locale history, taken from their website:
The Silverbow has the unique distinction as Alaska's oldest continuously operating bakery. It all began in 1898, when Gus Messerschmidt emigrated from Austria to Juneau. The Messerschmidts lived in an apartment above the bakery, as do the present owners. Gus, who died in 1938, is rumored to maintain a friendly haunting presence, especially to early risers.
In 1914, a three story concrete building was added which is the historic facade associated with the famous Silverbow Inn. Originally, the first floor was a retail bakery, and the upper stories were apartments. The Silverbow remains one of the largest kitchens in Juneau, presently serving both a bakery and a restaurant.
In March of 1997, Jill Ramiel and Ken Alper purchased the building in an attempt to bring the bakery back to its glory days. A full shipping container arrived from Seattle, stocked with bagel making equipment. On June 4th, 1997, Alaska's first traditional bagel bakery was opened and a downtown social hub was reborn.
