In 2010 renovations to the Windham County District Court House included the installation of permanent artwork through the Vermont Art in State Buildings program. The artist team of Donald Saaf and Julia Zanes were selected to create site specific art on the theme of trees, rivers, and animals important to and representative of the history and natural beauty of Southern Vermont. They replaced the south facing courthouse doors with a 4' by 6' cast stone relief sculpture of a Hermit Thrush - The state bird of Vermont. The official title of the work is "The Wondrous Chant of the Grey-Brown Bird".

A Hermit Thrush is standing in front of a tree in a grassy meadow. His head is facing back and his beak is open as if in song. Above the sculpture is an etched glass tree, by Donald Saaf, that compliments the sculpture.
