The Parque Eduardo VII of England is the largest park in the center of Lisbon, being commonly known only to Parque Eduardo VII. He was baptized in 1903 in honor of Edward VII of England, who had visited Lisbon in the previous year to reaffirm the alliance between the two countries.
The large grassy slope that extends for twenty-five acres was opened by the beginning of the twentieth century and was intended to extend the Avenida da Liberdade. In the northwest corner of the park, in the site of a former basalt quarry, is the Estufa Fria, a garden with a variety of exotic plants, streams, waterfalls, palm trees and trails, fuchsias, flowering shrubs, banana trees, lush plants with Hot Stove , lakes, cactus and tropical birds.
Near the greenhouses is a lake with large carp and a park for children to play with the form of a galleon. On the east side is Carlos Lopes Pavilion which was named the winner of the 1984 Olympic marathon.
At the north end is the Monument to the April 25 opened in 1997, directed by John Cutileiro, and the subject of much controversy for its phallic shape. In the top it´s followed by Amalia Rodrigues Garden that honors the Portuguese fado diva.
The Lisbon Book Fair is held annually in the central park
