Cruzeiro do Sul is a mural made of tiles placed in pavilhão Carlos Lopes in Lisbon.
It´s a work from the Portuguese artist Jorge Colaço and was made in the Sacavem Factory in 1922.
The panel represents the first Portuguese Navigators on the South Hemisphere. Here they didn´t have the Polar Star to guide them so they had to learn a new guiding method and they discovered the Southern Cross. Their new companion in the Southern Skies.
Camões in his Epic Poem "Os Lusiadas" wrote:
"Já descuberto tínhamos diante,
Lá no novo Hemisperio, nova estrela,
Não vista de outra gente, que, ignorante,
Alguns tempos esteve incerta dela.
Vimos a parte menos rutilante
E, por falta de estrelas, menos bela,
Do Pólo fixo, onde inda não se sabe
Que outra terra comece ou mar acabe.
Canto V, 14 "
"We've had discovered before,
in the new Hemispere a new star,
never seen by other people, who, ignorant,
some times was uncertain.
We saw the less shining
and by lack of stars, less beautiful,
From the fixed Pole, where it is not known
that other land end or the sea start."
A nova estrela trata-se na realidade de uma constelação, o Cruzeiro do Sul.
Acording to Camôes, this constelation never seen by other people was identified by the first time by the Portuguese Sailors.
The pavillion is not in the best conditions. It´s awaiting the works that will transform it in the Sports Museum and it will be recovered to it´s original condition. Meanwhile, at least one tile panel was already stolen from the inner atrium (now closed by the city hall).
