The Christ Church parish was established in 1837. The present building was constructed beginning in 1857 with the first services held May 22, 1859. The church was designed by Irish architect William Tinsley in a Gothic Revival style. The church has been modified with additions over the years including an addition underground in 1983. The church was renovated in 2000. The church was named the cathedral church of the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis in 1954.
