John Joyce Carter was born in Westport, Ireland on June 16, 1842 and emigrated to the USA sometime in 1845.

On September 17th 1862 Carter was a Second Lieutenant of Company B, 33d New York Infantry.

The certificate for his medal reads:

"While in command of a detached company, seeing his regiment thrown into confusion by a charge of the enemy, without orders made a countercharge upon the attacking column and checked the assault. Penetrated within the enemy's lines at night and obtained valuable information." Medal Issued: 10 September 1897.Date of Action: 17 September 1862. Place of Action: Antietam, Md.


Beginning October 10th 1863 he become a Captain of Company D, in the 1st New York Veteran Cavalry, and from there he retired from the military.

After the war Carter opened a men's clothing store in Titusville, PA and later became an oil man who would have dealings with John Rockefeller's "Standard Oil Company". His company "Carter Oil" would eventually become "Exxon".

Upon his death Carter was buried in Titusville PA's Woodlawn Cemetery in a family mausoleum with a plaque showing his status as a medal of honor recipient located near the entrance.

The mausoleum can be found on top of a small hill behind "The Driller" (a monument dedicated to Col. Edwin L. Drake. that can not be missed as you enter the cemetery).
