In 1900, Andrew Carnegie offered $50,000 for a building if property was acquired. Over $12,000 was raised locally to purchase a lot at the corner of Perry and Adams Streets. The new library was opened in 1904. It was the first free public library in the community, and was used for the library until 1959 when the main library was moved to a new facility a few blocks away. The Carnegie Building is currently used by the city of Montgomery to house the Property Appraisal Office. More information on the history of the public library can be found at (visit link)
