This house was the long-term residence of Thomas Goode Jones, a Civil War veteran, lawyer, politician, and federal judge. In this entry in the registry, he is noted for his service as governor of Alabama from 1890 to 1894. The house currently serves as the office for a law firm.
Governor Jones was born November 26, 1844, in Macon, Georgia, but moved with his family to Montgomery in 1850. He was attending Virgina Military Institute (VMI) but left to serve under Confederate General Stonewall Jackson. After the Civil War, he returned to Montgomery, where he began his career in law and later politics. On December 20, 1866, Jones married Georgene Caroline Bird of Montgomery. The historical marker in front of the house reads:
"Thomas Goode Jones, governor of Alabama from 1890-1894, occupied this house during his long political career which took him from the Montgomery City Council to a federal judgeship. During his two terms as governor, his home was the Executive Mansion and later frequently used as a federal courtroom. Originally a four room cottage, the house was enlarged by Jones in the early '90s. His son, the noted jurist Walter B. Jones, continued to live in his family home and inaugurated Jones Law School in a house to the rear. The law firm of Webb and Crumpton restored the house in 1978."
