Howard Schools
Marker # 3B 44
Text: “On this site was the campus of Gallatin Female Academy, 1824-36, and Sumner Female Academy, 1837-56. It was leased by the Howard Lodge L.O.O.F. to Howard Female Institute, 1856-74, Neophogen College, 1874-78, and Howard Female College, 1878-1922. It was Howard Elementary School, 1923-77, then purchased by First Baptist Church in 1982. Joseph S. Fowler, Howard president, 1857-61, served as U.S. Senator in 1865, the first senator seated from a former Confederate state.”
Marker is easy to get to. Located at the intersection of E Main Street and College Street. There is plenty of parking around this area of Gallatin. You can choose to park near some of the other markers and buildings or, as I chose, you can park at the businesses near the marker.
