The mighty Mississippi River starts in northern Minnesota. Flowing from Lake Itasca, the river winds its way over 2500 miles from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. Along it's course it crosses several states and many many communities. Bemidji is the first city on its route.
Bemidji, located in Beltrami County, Bemidji is home to about 13,000 year round residents, more with part time summer residents and visitors. The name Bemidji is an Ojibwe word meaning "lake with crossing waters" in reference to the Mississippi which crosses Lake Bemidji and in reference to the Mississippi's origin just a few miles away.
"First City on the Mississippi" is Bemidji's official city logo.
