In 1701, Count Philipp Reinhard von Hanau-Lichtenberg let the foundation stone for a new summer palace on the banks of the River Main in Kesselstadt.
The plan by architect Julius Ludwig Rothweil was based on French models. Grouped around a courtyard are the two-storey buildings of the Corps de Logis. Single-storey side wings highlight the dominance of the central block. In 1702 he was replaced by the Parisian engineer Jacques Girard, he expanded facility adjacent to the two side wings corner pavilions. 1706 coach house and stables were build in front of the main building. The gardener Marx Doßmann created a baroque French-style garden behind the castle from 1696 - before the start of construction of the castle.
The last Count of Hanau-Lichtenberg, Johann Reinhard III, extended the park 1723 completed by an orangery at the north-western end of the park.
Wilhelm II, Prince-elector of Hesse-Cassel renovated the castle until 1829. A redesign of the castle and the park was done under the Landgrave Friedrich Wilhelm of Hesse-Rumpenheim in the years 1875 - 1880.
At present the castle houses the Historical Museum Hanau, the Paper Theatre-Museum, a ceremonial hall of the civil registry office Hanau
and a café.
