Louis XIV (1638-1715) ruled for over 72 years. His mother, Anne of Austria had herself declared sole regent during his childhood...and she in turn had relied on Cardinal Mazerin for most decisions. He built the Palace of Versaille..at least partially to subdue the power of the nobility in Paris. Alazendre Dumas' novel "The Man in the Iron Mask" concerned the legend that the masked prisoner was the twin brother of Louis XIV. Louis also spent much of his career battling with the French Protestants. Read more about him at (

This sculpture depicts Louis on horseback as a young and barechested man. The figures appear to be about 15 foot tall. He rides the horse casually..with a scroll in his right hand...even though the horse would appear to be agitated. The piece is located in the courtyard of the Louvre atop a tall rectangular marble pedestal (about 15 feet tall). The Louvre was Louis' Palace until he completed Versailles. This sculpture is a 1988 lead replica of a 1673 work by Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680). Read more about Bernini at (
