O Cavador (The Digger) is a work of the Portuguese artist António Augusto da Costa Motta (tio/uncle)
O Cavador depicts the figure of an agriculture worker with a hoe in full motion and full of expression. The figure, represented with a hoe in his hand and twisted body in full crop comes with shirt sleeves rolled up and tied to the work pants right shins and wears a wide brimmed hat.
It was the first sculpture to be placed in the Garden after the establishment of the Republic.
The sculpture is made of Lioz Limestone (A rare type of limestone found in Portugal near Sintra and used for ornamental purposes).
