This sculpture represents a nude female figure sitting on cushion. The figure's right leg is bent at an angle of 90 ° with the soles of the toes on the floor. The right leg is also bent with the left foot behind the heel of the right foot. The eyes are half closed, the head slightly tilted to the left side, the arm on the same side is completely folded and raised to the shoulder height and the hand placed slightly behind the head.
This naturalist piece was made by Simões de Almeida (nephew) in the early years of the Republic, and is one of the most popular and appreciated sculptures in the Garden - "Despertar" (The Awakening), also known as "A Preguiça" (The Laziness/Indolence), represents a female figure of great expressiveness, showing the very elegant anatomical treatment, full of femininity. The moment is captured photographically, depicting also the metaphor of awakening to life and to puberty in all innocence that the sculptor saw in the smile and eyes half closed this female nude.
In 1915, a patinated bronze cast of "Awakening", joined the Portuguese representation at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, California, which celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal.

The statue has been vandalized. Part of one arm is missing and parts of the statue were painted.
