This monument, intended to celebrate the centennial of the International Herald Tribune, has become an informal memorial to Princess Diana who died in a traffic accident in the tunnel beneath this site.
The engraving at the site reads:
"FLAMME DE LA LIBERTE
REPLIQUE EXACTE
DE LA STATUE DE LA LIBERTE
OFFERTE AU PEUPLE FRANCAIS
PAR DES DONATEURS
DU MONDE ENTIER
EN SYMBOLE
DE L'AMITE FRANCO-AMERICAIN
A L'OCCASION DU CENTENAIRE
DE
L'INTERNATIONAL HERALD TRIBUNE
PARIS, 1887-1987"
which my best attempt at translation into English would be:
"FLAME OF FREEDOM
EXACT REPLICA OF
THE STATUE OF LIBERTY
MADE FOR THE FRENCH PEOPLE
BY DONORS THROUGHOUT
THE WORLD
IN RECOGNITION OF
THE Franco-American friendship
ON THE OCCASION OF THE CENTENARY
OF THE
INTERNATIONAL HERALD TRIBUNE
PARIS, 1887-1987"
