This is the newer of the two courthouses in St. Clair County. It was built because of population growth in the southern part of the county. The courthouse is a two-story white building with a columned portico on the front.
St. Clair County was created in 1818 by the first session of Alabama Territorial Legislature from lands ceded by the Creek Indian Nation in the Treaty of Ft. Jackson, 1814. The county is named for Gen. Arthur St. Clair, hero of the American Revolution and Governor of Northwest Territory. The county’s first settlers were veterans of the Creek Indian War of 1813-14 from Tennessee and Georgia. The first county seat was established in 1822 at Ashville. Pell City was established as an industrial town in1890 by George H. Pell of New York. Growth of population south of Backbone Mt. and difficulty of crossing mountain to reach Ashville led to the establishment of a branch county seat here in 1902.
