The fortifications were built in 14th century. There were 26 towers 11 to 14m high, and 21 of them has been preserved today (or at least their fragments). In front of the walls there was a moat about 45m wide. There were three gates to the town: one at the North and two at the South.
The town walls were torn down in 19th century to allow town expansion. The remains of the fortifications are being renovated since 1970s.
