Henri Murger (1822-1861), also known as Louis-Henri Murger or Henry Murger, became known as a chronicler of his life as a poor writer..part of a group called the Water-Drinkers because they were too poor to drink wine. His works are seen as the inspiration for the opera La Boheme and the musical Rent.
His works include:
"Scènes de la vie de bohème (1847–49)
Scènes de la vie de jeunesse (1851)
Le Pays latin (1851)
Scènes de campagne (1854)
Le Roman de toutes les femmes (1854)
Ballades et Fantaisies (1854)
Les Nuits d’hiver (1856)
Le Sabot rouge (1860)
Le Roman du Capucin (published 1869)"

The monument has a bronze bust of him at its top. He is depicted as middle-aged...balding but with a beard and mustache. He is wearing a high-collared coat and flowers form a trim at the base of the bust and continue down the pedestal. The pedestal is engraved:
"A Henry Murger 1822 1861 La Jeunesse Ses Amis 1895" which indicates that the monument was dedicated to him in 1895 by youth who consider themselves his friends. The artist is Théophile-Henri Bouillon.
